🦷 CLINICAL INDICATIONS

Where SMITE DE-OX™
Makes the Difference

Anywhere composite surfaces meet oxygen during polymerization, DE-OX is the professional answer.

01

Direct Composite Restorations

Every direct restoration — Class I through V — ends with an oxygen-inhibited surface layer. That tacky 10–100 µm zone weakens surface hardness and cuts long-term wear resistance. DE-OX eliminates it before you ever touch a polishing disc.

✓ Apply after shaping the final increment, before the last cure
02

Composite Veneers

The facial surface of a composite veneer is the most oxygen-exposed layer in the entire restoration. An uncured OIL on a veneer stains faster, polishes unevenly, and loses gloss within months. DE-OX delivers a hard, stain-resistant surface from day one.

✓ Apply over the full veneer surface after the final light cure
03

Resin Cementation

When cementing ceramic veneers, inlays, or onlays, exposed resin cement margins are oxygen-inhibited. These uncured micro-porous margins stain, dissolve, and attract plaque over time. DE-OX seals every margin completely — no weak spots.

✓ Apply at margins after seating & tack-curing, then full cure
04

Bulk-Fill Capping Layer

Bulk-fill systems require a 2mm capping layer of regular composite. This final cap develops an OIL just like any other composite — it's not exempt. Apply DE-OX over the capping layer for a fully polymerized, hard occlusal surface that won't wear prematurely.

✓ Critical for posterior occlusal surfaces — apply before the final cure of the cap
The Science

What Is the Oxygen-Inhibited Layer?

Every time you cure a composite, oxygen from the surrounding air reacts with the free radicals on the surface — stopping polymerization before it completes. This creates a permanent weak zone at the surface of every restoration.

The Problem: Oxygen Kills Surface Polymerization
Free radicals generated during light curing are quenched by atmospheric oxygen before they can complete the polymerization chain reaction. The result: a 10–100 μm surface layer that remains soft, porous, and under-cured.
📉
The Consequence: Reduced Hardness & Color Instability
The oxygen-inhibited layer has significantly lower Vickers hardness than the underlying composite body. It's also more porous — absorbing stains, bacteria, and saliva. This layer is the primary cause of early surface discoloration.
The Solution: Exclude Oxygen Before the Final Cure
Apply SMITE DE-OX gel to cover the composite surface completely before your final light cure. The gel excludes atmospheric oxygen — allowing complete polymerization to the very surface of the restoration.
💎
The Result: Maximum Hardness. Better Polish. Longer Life.
Full surface polymerization means maximum surface hardness, reduced porosity, better polish retention, improved color stability — and a composite that performs to its true rated specifications.
⚠️ WHY PHARMACY GLYCERIN IS NOT ENOUGH

Pharmacy Glycerin vs. Dental-Grade DE-OX Gel
They Are Not the Same

Many dentists use pharmacy glycerin as an oxygen barrier. While it does something, it falls short in every critical dimension that matters clinically. Here's exactly why SMITE DE-OX is not a luxury — it's the difference between "good enough" and professionally complete.

🧪
Purity Is Not Guaranteed
Pharmacy glycerin is typically 85–98% purity. The remaining 2–15% can include water, additives, or industrial solvents — none tested for compatibility with composite resins or bonding agents.
💧
Water Content Reduces Efficacy
Even small amounts of water in pharmacy glycerin form a thin aqueous layer that doesn't fully exclude oxygen. Dental DE-OX formulations are anhydrous or near-anhydrous for maximum oxygen barrier performance.
🌊
Wrong Viscosity — Runs Off Surface
Pharmacy glycerin is formulated for skin use — it's too thin and mobile for intraoral application. On vertical surfaces or cusp tips, it flows away before you can complete the cure cycle.
❌ Pharmacy Glycerin
85–98% purity — impurities unknown
Contains water — reduces oxygen exclusion
Thin viscosity — runs off vertical surfaces
Not sterile — contamination risk
Not tested with dental composites
Difficult to apply precisely
Unprofessional presentation to patients
✅ SMITE DE-OX™
Dental-grade formulation — controlled purity
Near-anhydrous — maximum oxygen exclusion
Optimized viscosity — stays on any surface
Sterile packaging — no contamination
Formulated for composite compatibility
Precise syringe application
Professional product — clinical credibility

Key Features

Engineered for Complete Polymerization

Every specification of SMITE DE-OX is designed around one goal: eliminating the oxygen-inhibited layer completely.

💎
Translucent Dental-Grade Gel
Crystal-clear formulation confirms full surface coverage without obscuring the restoration. Light passes through completely — no interference with the curing light spectrum or degree of conversion.
Core Technology
🌊
Optimized Viscosity — Stays on Any Surface
Specifically formulated to stay in place on posterior cusps, anterior buccal surfaces, and vertical walls. Doesn't run, doesn't pool — maintains a continuous oxygen barrier across the entire restoration surface.
Clinical Advantage
⚗️
Near-Anhydrous Formulation
Minimal water content ensures maximum oxygen exclusion. Unlike pharmacy glycerin, the low water activity of SMITE DE-OX creates a true anaerobic environment at the composite surface during the final cure cycle.
🔬
Complete Composite Compatibility
Works with all light-cured composites — flowable, paste, nano-hybrid, bulk-fill. Rinses cleanly with water after curing. No interaction with monomer systems. Verified compatible with SMITE Flow™.
💧
5ml Syringe — 50+ Applications
Precision tip for targeted application to the restoration surface only. One syringe covers an entire month of average composite workload. Efficient, minimal waste, precisely controlled amount per application.
Better Polish, Better Outcomes
Complete surface polymerization means a harder, smoother surface that responds better to polishing. Restorations achieve their full aesthetic potential — and maintain it longer because the surface is truly cured.
Clinical Protocol

How to Use SMITE DE-OX™

One simple step added to your final increment — complete polymerization guaranteed.

1
Complete Your Restoration
Build your composite in layers as normal — cure each increment according to manufacturer's instructions
Cure all increments EXCEPT the final one — do your finishing shaping first
The final increment is where SMITE DE-OX makes the critical difference
Do NOT cure the final surface layer yet
📋 Use after shaping your final increment
2
Apply SMITE DE-OX™ Gel
Apply a thin, continuous layer of SMITE DE-OX gel over the entire exposed composite surface using the syringe tip
The translucent gel should cover the restoration fully — you can still see the composite form through it
Ensure complete coverage including margins, cusps, and any concave areas
Immediately proceed to light cure — do not wait
💎 Thin, even layer — full surface coverage
✨ Tip: For large restorations, apply and cure one section at a time to ensure the gel hasn't dried out before curing.
3
Cure, Rinse & Polish
Light cure through the gel for the full recommended time — the translucent gel does NOT reduce light transmission
After curing, rinse the gel thoroughly with water — it washes off completely and cleanly
The composite surface is now fully polymerized — non-tacky, hard, and ready for finishing
Polish normally — you'll notice improved surface quality and easier gloss achievement
✅ Fully cured surface — ready to polish
🌟 Result: Maximum surface hardness achieved. No sticky layer. No compromised margins. Complete restoration.

FAQ

Common Clinical Questions

Why can't I just use pharmacy glycerin instead?
Pharmacy glycerin is formulated for cosmetic/pharmaceutical use — not dental composite application. It has uncontrolled purity (85–98%), unknown water content that reduces oxygen exclusion efficiency, and incorrect viscosity that flows off intraoral surfaces. SMITE DE-OX is a dental-grade formulation with near-anhydrous composition, optimized viscosity, and sterile packaging — designed specifically to eliminate the oxygen-inhibited layer on composite restorations.
Does the gel interfere with light transmission during curing?
No. SMITE DE-OX is crystal-clear and translucent — it transmits the full visible light spectrum used by dental curing lights without attenuation. The gel does not reduce the degree of conversion in the composite body beneath it. Light passes through as if the gel were not there.
When exactly should I apply it during the procedure?
Apply SMITE DE-OX over the final composite increment AFTER you have completed your final anatomical shaping but BEFORE the last light cure. Apply a thin continuous layer covering all exposed composite surfaces, then immediately light cure through the gel. After curing, rinse with water to remove the gel completely.
Does it work with all types of composite?
Yes — SMITE DE-OX is compatible with all light-cured composites: flowable, paste, nano-hybrid, micro-hybrid, bulk-fill. It's verified compatible with SMITE Flow™. It works with any composite where oxygen inhibition is a concern, including anterior esthetic composites where surface quality is critical.
Do I need it for every increment or just the last one?
For routine layering, you only need it on the final increment. Between layers, the oxygen-inhibited layer is actually beneficial — it allows chemical bonding between increments. However, the final surface increment must be fully polymerized. Apply DE-OX gel on the final exposed surface before the last cure cycle.
How much do I use per application and how long does one syringe last?
Very little is needed — a thin layer covering only the composite surface. For an average Class II restoration, approximately 0.05–0.1ml is used. One 5ml syringe provides 50–100+ applications depending on cavity size and technique. In an average dental practice doing 2–3 composite cases per day, one syringe lasts 3–4 weeks easily.
